| When my daughter was
little I didn't let her watch commercials because I
didn't want her to have a mind that worked in three
minute sound bites. When I see the evolution of the
internet I am fascinated by people's obsessions with
quotes. It's like the intellectual sound bite of the
age. I not sure if anyone actually has the patience
to read the books any more. I'm not complaining
rather apologizing for the fact that there will be
the odd quote that catches my fancy on this page.
Mostly it will be from a book I have actually read.
But sometimes perhaps not. You will have to decide
for yourself if it's worth exploring. I think of
quotes as a kind of spice we can add to our thoughts
or our own writings. They can bring out the flavour
of the soup but should never dominate the taste nor
would they taste all that good out of context.
"The beauty of truth is
that it need not be proclaimed or believed. It skips
from soul to soul, ... but it is what it is. -
Mark Helprin, A Winter's Tale
Know then thyself,
presume not God to scan;
The proper study of Mankind is Man. {sic}
Plac'd on this isthmus of a middle state,
A being darkly wise, and rudely great...
From Alexander Pope. An Essay on Man
"...
mythology is not a lie, mythology is poetry, it is
metaphorical. It has been well said that mythology
is the penultimate truth - penultimate because the
ultimate cannot be put into words." .--- Joseph
Campbell
The Power of Myth.1988
"All things have an accompaniment of magic.
If the facts seem plain and thoroughly known to
thee,
‘tis plain thou knowest nothing about it"
-
Ralph Waldo Emerson
